NICU
Religion and Beliefs

Hospitals across the United States have very understanding policies regarding the religion and beliefs of parents and families that have and infant in the neonatal ICU. It is imoprtant to talk to the nurse, doctor, or practitioner caring for the infant, and address any customs or care that are important to your baby. Also, informing the charge nurse and nurse manager help ensure that your desires are met to the fullest extent.

For example, with an infant about to pass away, many cultures and religions have different ways to care for this situation. There may be a baptism for a baby for some parents, or there may be a shaman to perform a ritual for others. There is no wrong and no right. Every belief is honored and respected, and it is important that parents are allowed to say good-bye in their own way.

Remember to discuss your beliefs and customs with the NICU staff caring for your baby, and if you have any questions, remember that NICU staff is trained to accommodate the many different beliefs and traditions of cultures should they ever arise.
