Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is a condition where a mother consumes alcohol during pregnancy, potentially causing birth defects and mental retardation. This is completely avoidable if a mother chooses not to consume any alcohol while pregnant.

- Small size for gestational age or small stature in relation to peers
- Facial abnormalities such as small eye openings
- Poor coordination
- Hyperactive behavior

- Poor reasoning and judgment skills
- Sleep and sucking disturbances in infancy
