What is Hydrops Fetalis?

Hydrops Fetalis (hydrops) is an extremely dangerous condition in which the body of the fetus or infant has abnormal swelling from additional fluid build-up in the body. The most common type is called non-immune, which is when the baby's ability to control fluid cannot be managed.

Treatment

In the neonatal ICU, an infant with hydrops is treated according to the severity of the condition. This can involve oxygen management, medications, and surgeries or procedures. Severe hydrops can potentially be fatal.
