Hypoglycemia

What is Hypoglycemia?

Hypoglycemia is when the infant's blood sugar, or glucose levels, drop too low. The result is a lethargic baby, who may have less energy to move and eat.

Treatment

Treatment is relatively simple. A baby in the neonatal ICU with hypoglycemia may just need a simple feeding of breast milk or formula.

If the glucose level is still too low after a feeding, then an IV will be started, and glucose will be given to the infant via IV fluids.
